Open Streets ICT and Seasonal Events Invigorate Downtown Wichita

A Vibrant Array of Activities Draws Community to the Heart of the City

As autumn approaches, downtown Wichita becomes a hub of activity, offering residents and visitors a plethora of events that celebrate the community's spirit and diversity.

Open Streets ICT stands out as a highlight of the season. Scheduled for Sunday, September 28, 2025, from noon to 4 p.m., this free event transforms a 2.5-mile stretch of Douglas Avenue—from Grove Street to Seneca Street—into a car-free zone. Attendees can walk, bike, or skate while enjoying live music, dance performances, and various activities. The event aims to promote healthy living and community engagement by encouraging people to explore the city in a new way.

In addition to Open Streets ICT, several other events are set to enliven downtown Wichita:

Heritage Square Concert Series: Every Wednesday in September, the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum hosts free lunchtime concerts at Heritage Square. These performances feature local musicians and provide a delightful midday break for downtown workers and visitors.

Wichita Wagonmasters Downtown Chili Cookoff: On Saturday, September 27, 2025, from noon to 4 p.m., this beloved annual event returns, offering attendees the chance to sample a variety of chili recipes prepared by local teams. The cookoff is a fundraiser that supports various local charities.

Wichita Asian Festival: Also on September 27, 2025, the Century II Convention & Exhibition Hall hosts this cultural festival celebrating Asian heritage. The event features traditional performances, a pageant, and over 40 food and craft vendors.

Great Plains Renaissance Festival: Taking place on September 27 and 28, 2025, at Sedgwick County Park, this festival transports attendees back in time with medieval-themed entertainment, including jousting, music, and artisan vendors.

These events not only provide entertainment but also foster a sense of community and highlight the rich cultural tapestry of Wichita. As the city embraces the fall season, downtown Wichita remains the place to be for those seeking engaging and diverse experiences.
